Proposed Scholarship Fundraiser with Powell's

Research:

Amazon offers a sliding scale from 4% to 8.5% and is unlikely to help our General Assembly presence this year. Unless we're shipping `1881 items per quarter, we won't see anything above 7.5%.

Borders operates online through Amazon and has the same offering.

Barnes and Noble offers 5% plus, sometimes, a bonus of up to 3.5% on some items. This bonus does not go over 2% until the referral generates $75,000 in sales in a given calendar quarter. Buyer must also make purchase immediately after clicking affiliate program link. Returning to the site later will not generate a referral credit.

ABE Books is a consortium of independent booksellers, including Powell's. Their affiliate program starts with 5% base level. Accounting to their website, higher commissions and incentives are negotiated on an individual level.

Powell's offers a fixed 7.5%, regardless of how many items are shipped. The sessions are tracked by a cookie which expires after 90 days or when an individual logs out. All the items, new and used, are in their stock. Powell's carries a huge selection of current and out-of-print books. Searching and browsing, you'll see lots of Beacon Press books and other books which appeal to our Unitarian and Universalist interests, including those of pagans, lesbians, gays, Buddhists, scientists, theologians, and educators. Powell's also carries a huge selection of DVDs.

Browse the site, check out the sale items, welcome to heaven.

I propose the following:

1. Partnership Account

Just in time for Christmas. . .

CU2C2 will establish and promote a partnership account with Powell's to generate funds for scholarships, camperships, and financial assistance (hereafter referred to as "scholarships") via the Powells.com Partner Program. Funds would be disperse at least annually to Association Members. At the end of the year, CU2C2 will cut checks to each participating Association Member in good standing, based upon dues level, with the checks earmarked "Donation for scholarships," or equivalent terms reasonable to the Treasurer of CU2C2.

Members paying the highest tier of dues (currently $650) would be eligible for three shares. Members paying the middle tier of dues (currently $450) would be eligible for two shares. Members paying the lower tier of dues (currently $250) would be eligible for one shares.

None of the funds received for scholarships would stay with CU2C2 or be used for CU2C2's expenses.

CU2C2 would provide html code for links and graphics to promote the program on individual camp and conference websites, in addition to CU2C2's website and willing congregational websites. The CU2C2-hosted graphics would change periodically.

CU2C2 will negotiate for a higher commission, if possible.

CU2C2 members in good standing may also opt to establish their own partner ID with Powell's, opting out of the shared partnership revenue, but still take advantage of CU2C2-supplied rotating graphics on their own website and other willing websites, and still use any CU2C2-supplied promotional materials for scholarship fundraising, as long as all revenue is used for scholarships.

2. Coupons

CU2C2 will try to establish a coupon program with Powell's and make coupons available at the CU2C2 booth at the UUA 2007 General Assembly in Portland, Oregon.

CU2C2 will try to establish a coupon program that gives the customer the option of receiving the discount or donating the discount to the CU2C2 scholarship fund.

3. Booksale at General Assembly

CU2C2 will invite Powell's to hold a booksale, as previously mentioned, in our booth at GA, with a share of the proceeds donated to scholarships. Powell's would be responsible for associated costs of addition space at our cost.

I spoke with Collier Brown, former SWIM DJ and current manager of Powell's Technical Bookstore. He's going to hook me up with the right people to talk to figure out what is possible.
